Neil & Mel

It rained. It stopped. It poured. It stopped. It REALLY poured. It drizzled. It stopped. It shone! It rained. It stopped.

What a roller-coaster of a wedding day for Neil and Mel, and all the while the time was spent with laughs and tears and everything in between. Knowing the weather might throw us for a loop, we made sure to plan a pub stop in the middle of the day so we could grab some food and drink, get out of the down pour and take a breath. This time, the good folks at Biera played host.

What an amazing building! So many different nooks and crannies, both inside and out. From there we headed out to Mill Creek ravine for some mandatory bridge shots, then to Remedy Cafe for another quick warm up before heading to the reception. The added bonus about our quick cafe stop, is that Remedy is where Neil and Mel met when he was a server there. It was fun recreating that moment.

Our evening ended at the Pleasantview Community League where we were witness to heartfelt speeches, tons of laughter, and an off the hook dance floor.

We hope you enjoy this peak at Neil & Mel’s amazing day.

Congrats!

Natalie & Ryan

Our last wedding of the year was a fun one.

We spent a beautiful fall day with Natalie and Ryan starting at the Matrix Hotel for the getting ready and the ceremony, then heading to Local on Jasper for a much needed pub stop, where we got some great casual photos of the bridal team, before heading back to the Matrix to dance the night away.

Finding all the spots at Local was fun. Because of the cloudy day, we sat at a long table on the patio and used that as a staging area and after getting a few drinks and nachos (our favourite), we ran around the place finding all the cool spots to feature this good looking group of people.

The night was full of great speeches, real emotion, and great food.

Congratulations Natalie & Ryan! Thanks for letting us hang out with you for the day!

The Aliens

We got the chance to work with What It Is Productions again on their latest theatrical outing. In the past we've done work for such projects as Ligature Marks and Nighthawk Rules which both premiered at the Edmonton Fringe Festival. The Aliens, is their first foray into a main season production as part of Theatre Network's Roxy Performance Series, and we couldn't be happier to be a part of it.

The main poster design was a fun one to shoot. As the show takes place behind a cafe, we wanted to capture several of the moments of the show in an overlapping composite image.

They open tonight! Got check them out. Details below.

Two best friends in their early 30s hang out behind a Vermont coffee house to play music and discuss Bukowski when an impressionable young employee of the shop stumbles upon them. The shy young man becomes enamored with the pair, and the two 30-somethings set out to teach him “everything they know.” The Aliens is a story about the humour and heartbreak of growing up.

Misha & Caleb

It feels like every time you go downtown, another mural has graced the side of building, adding such personality to the neighbourhood. For Misha and Caleb's session, we headed to 104 St, one of our favourite spots in the city and just walked around the block taking advantage of the varying architecture in such a small radius.

We spent some time with the dogs then dropped them off to explore the rest of the block. Pretty happy with how these shots turned out. Enjoy!

Liz & Greg

My sister is getting married!

Having worked so many weddings in the last few years, you forget all that gets put into pulling off these events. Our family has been consumed with wedding talk for the better part of 2017, and the big day is almost here. Even though I am part of the family, by nature I had a hard time letting anyone else photograph the big day.  Brad and I will be there with bells on to document the fun.

As with any couple about to be married, we ALWAYS recommend an engagement session. When we were talking about this with Liz and Greg, my mom kept chiming in, "I don't get it. Why do you do engagement photos? We never did those."

Well mom, beyond the added bonus of getting some photos the couple could use for invitations, or to post on social media, how many couples have ever had professional photos taken of themselves BEFORE their wedding? Would you really want the first time to be on the day where you are coordinating family, time pressures, caterers, flowers, music, decorations,  etc...?

An engagement session is really about being comfortable having your picture taken without the pressure of the big day. We get a quick sense of what the couple likes and what they are not into. Additionally, it allows for photos in locations you may not be able to get to on the big day.

In this case, Liz and Greg are getting married at the Calgary Zoo and their reception is there as well. So for their engagement session we got to hit one of our favourite urban spots.

Can't wait for the big day and to share the photos with y'all.

Does it make sense now mom?

Spring Portrait Blitz - Team Shereka

While it's always awesome to see some of our favourite clients at each of our blitzes, it is also nice to meet some new faces. Shereka and her crew found us through a referral and we couldn't have been happier spending some time with them.

A lot of laughs were had as we toured the Le Marchand Manor capturing this family in a moment in time. Hope to see you all again soon!

Ashley & Adam

This was a wedding for the books!

We loved working with Ashley and Adam. While the original plan had been a warm, fall wedding, that is not something you can bet on in mid-October in Edmonton. We woke up that day to a blanket of snow across the city. What that gave us, was a really cool mix of fresh, white snow and the still green leaves of the river valley.

The ceremony was held downtown in the beautiful St. Joachim Catholic Church. This was walking distance to one of our favourite street art locations in the city. From there we headed to Louise McKinney Park to take advantage of the newly fallen snow on the promenade. Before heading to the reception at the Ardrossan Recreation Complex, we made a quick stop at Local in Sherwood Park for a bite to eat and some casual photos. We say it time and time again, when it comes to weddings, plan a stop at a local eatery. It allows for the day to slow down bit and doubles as a great backup plan in case it rains. Curious to know more? Check out our video on Maximizing Time for your wedding.

The literal icing on the cake of this wedding was that it was Dave's birthday and these two went out of their way to pick up a delicious chocolate cake at Duchess Bake Shop and sing Happy Birthday in the middle of their big day.

We have THE BEST clients. Enjoy some shots from the day.

The Wilkies

Better late than never!

In October, we had the pleasure of shooting this awesome growing family days before their newest addition join the group. We headed out to the Edmonton River Valley for a walk and shoot. Little V ran around picking up everything he could find, sliding down snow banks, and laughing the whole time.

This type of shoot shows Edmonton at it's best. Hope you dig it too.

The Believers

dbphotographics here with yet another theatre poster. This time we had the pleasure of working with Nancy McAlear of the MadFandango Theatre Collective to help promote their latest production of The Believers.

When we met with Nancy to discuss the project, the discussion surrounded the idea of negative space. There's an element of something looming that the characters in the show are missing. We are pumped with how this session turned out and the feedback we've been getting. Can't wait to check out the show. If you are interested in seeing it, here are the details.
